The Koh Tao Calender...
Written by Sonia Cork
Monday, 11 August 2008
Chris has seen the first printed copy of the calender and apparently it exceeds all expectations! I can't wait to see it first hand. Hopefully it will be here soon, so if you know in advance that you want copies, don't forget to let us know and we can put some aside for you.

Just a quick reminder to all, the calender features 12 island beauties, all photographed with the beautiful scenery of Koh Tao as the backdrop. It's A2 format, so poster sized once open, with room to write your daily plans & appointments and is retailing at 1,200 baht.

F***ing Nemo
Written by Chris Clark
Wednesday, 06 August 2008
My favourite rant subject has reared it's ugly little head again. Young Gene, one of our new trainee videographers was threatened and then attacked underwater for the crime of approaching Nemo.

WAKE THE FUCK UP GUYS, THE LITTLE FISH ARE NOT WORTH A SENTENCE FOR MURDER OR GBH SO HERE IS SOME VITAL INFO FOR YOU WANABEE PROTECTORS OF THE REALM:

1. There are hundreds of Saddleback Clownfish anemones around Koh Tao, go exploring you useless wankers. There's 5 families just north of Twins, 60 on Sairee Beach and none of them are protected by a ring of death.

2. The ring of death is killing the anemone, stop it, idiots!

3. If anyone out there touches a trainee from ACE Marine Images you will be answering directly to me, tossers!

Nibiru
Written by Chris Clark

It would seem that our time has come, Nibiru is upon us. Our wise, yet extinct, ancestors, the Mayans, have predicted our demise, the world will come to an end, once again. The cycle of destruction is here, 2012 is the deadline and this time it's real, not like the dry run we had at the millennium. Despite their inability to predict the arrival of the Spanish, people still love to believe them. The Spanish for god's sake!

I am an avid conspiracy theorist, you gotta love it, UFO's, the unknown, it's probably why I like treasure and shipwrecks. However this is "the big one, the real thing", sorry, can't be avoided, complete and utter annihilation of mankind... That's the funny bit, the powers that be are keeping it secret. Secret, for what, you are all fucked!

Look, we all love to play but has anybody other than ufosrusdotcom got some serious info on this ground breaker because personally I think it's more bollocks, more bollocks like the millenium, more bollocks like the catholic church, lots of people believed in, or believe in, both! Or should we just go out and start burning witches, come on guys, let's look to the future, improve the world, if you can't handle it then leave, the aliens are waiting for you at the bottom of the ocean. Good luck, nanoo nanoo!

Full Moon Is Over, Time to Get Busy.
Written by Rob Keeler
Tuesday, 22 July 2008

High season has truly kicked in here and the island in jam packed, no room at any of the inn's I'm afraid so if you've arrived this afternoon you may well end up sleeping "rough".  Of course there are rooms to be filled but these last remaining sanctuary's come at a premium as all the budget accommodation is the first to be filled, so dig deep into those pockets people!

Luckily we seem to have avoided the obligatory full-moon weather change this month and the skies are as blue as ever.  One word of warning though....IT"S HOT AS HELL!  We've been lucky under the waves too as the diving has stayed beautiful, crystal clear and blue.  Get out there and do a dive course or some fun dives while it lasts, it could all go to tit tomorrow.

I want to end on a sad note, but not an altogether hopeless one.  I have just had the (mis)pleasure of watching a film by Rob Stewart titled Sharkwater.  Now it doesn't make for happy viewing as it's message is a rather bleak one and some of the scenes are hard to watch, i haven't hidden my eye's like that since the days of Dr. Who and the Daleks, but I feel it is a MUST see for anyone who loves the oceans and all that they contain....that means us lot!  As we all know sharks are being fished for their fins on a shocking scale, and I mean SHOCKING.  Marine sanctuaries around the globe are being subjected to illegal shark fishing due to lack of action by their respective governments and ultimately the UN.  It seems big business (mainly here in Asia) has a louder voice than the conservationists trying to protect sharks from being fished for their fins.

We all know shark fin soup is flavourless until you add chicken or beef stock and a whole range of herbs and spices, the simple fact is that shark fin soup is eaten purely to signify prosperity and lofty social standing due to it's high cost.  Ultimately it will be the whole marine ecosystem that will suffer as shark populations continue to decline at alarming rates.  Sharks occupy the top of the food chain and therefore affect all marine life including corals.  The worlds oceans control our climate and once sharks disappear who knows what catastrophe's await us, the whole ecosystem could/will collapse.

So why is shark finning so widespread?  Because thus far not enough noise has been made by those wanting it stopped.  I'm sure those of us against this abhorrent practice must outnumber those in favour of it by a few million to one, apathy is the sharks biggest enemy!  We need more impassioned voices.  We need to bring this issue front and centre.  So get out there and make some noise, cause a stir, tell people to watch Sharkwater, educate new divers and old ones alike.  Encourage them to admire sharks for their natural beauty and grace, help them get past the "Jaws" effect.  Next time you hear someone say they're afraid of sharks ask them why and tell them the truth, sharks are amazing creatures that deserve our help and protection.  Go diving and snorkelling with sharks more often, prove that the shark can be a bigger money earner through tourism than through fishing them to near and probable extinction.  Write to those responsible for making laws that protect our natural world and sharks in particular, voice your concerns.  Check out www.savingsharks.com for more ways to help end this outrage.  Hopefully we can make a difference.
